How this calculator works
Every number above is calibrated against real 2026 Canadian Shopify project quotes. The base store-size cost reflects what a small senior agency charges for a competent setup at that scale. Add-ons price what specialized work (B2B portals, subscriptions, multi-currency) actually adds in agency hours. The range (low to high) represents the spread between a clean-scope freelancer build and a deeper agency build with conversion optimization and SEO done properly.
The estimate is intentionally not specific to any one agency. It’s a market estimate. The real quote for your project might land anywhere inside the range depending on your specific scope, content readiness, and the agency you choose.
What’s NOT in this estimate
- Monthly running costs. Shopify plan ($32–$399 CAD/mo for non-Plus), apps ($60–$300/mo), transaction fees if you don’t use Shopify Payments.
- Product photography and content creation. If your product shots aren’t ready, budget $1,000–$5,000 separately.
- Marketing budget post-launch. A common rule: budget at least 1× the build cost for the first 90 days of ads + SEO content.
- Shopify Plus. If you need it (typically $300K+/mo revenue), Plus itself costs $2,300 CAD/mo plus 0.20% of revenue over $800K/mo. The build cost for a Plus migration starts around $30,000.

Why is the range so wide? Because real quotes vary by 40–60% even for the same nominal scope, depending on the agency’s process, design depth, and how strictly the scope is locked. The “low” estimate reflects a tight-scope, lean-process build. The “high” reflects a thorough agency build with conversion research, SEO setup, and a real launch plan.
Can I really get a Shopify store built for under $2,000? Yes, but only at the DIY templated tier — you customize a $200–$400 theme yourself, hire someone $500–$1,000 to set it up, and accept that conversion optimization and SEO are on you. Works for testing demand; rarely produces a store that compounds over years.
