The Technical SEO Issues We Find on Almost Every Site (and How to Fix Them)

We audit a lot of websites, and the same technical SEO problems show up again and again — quietly capping rankings the content has already earned. Here are the ones we find most, and the fix for each.

The Technical SEO Issues We Find on Almost Every Site (and How to Fix Them)

We run a lot of site audits, and after enough of them a pattern emerges: the same handful of technical SEO problems show up on almost every website. None of them are exotic. Most are invisible to the owner. Together they quietly cap the rankings your content has already earned. Here are the issues we find most often — grouped the way we actually work through them — with the fix for each.

Crawling & indexing

If a search engine cannot crawl and index a page, nothing else on this list matters. The usual culprits:

  • Accidental noindex tags — often left over from a staging site. One line can deindex a whole section. Fix: audit your index directives and remove any noindex on pages you want ranked.
  • Pages blocked in robots.txt — a stray Disallow can hide important URLs from Google entirely. Fix: confirm robots.txt only blocks what you truly want hidden.
  • Broken internal links and 404s — they waste crawl budget and dead-end your visitors. Fix: find them and repair or redirect.
  • Redirect chains and loops — three hops to reach a page bleeds link equity and speed. Fix: point each redirect straight at the final URL.
  • A missing or stale XML sitemap. Fix: generate a clean sitemap and submit it in Search Console.

Duplicate content & canonicals

Duplicate or near-duplicate URLs split your ranking signals and leave Google guessing which version to show.

  • Missing canonical tags on paginated, filtered, or parameter URLs. Fix: set canonicals to the preferred version.
  • HTTP and HTTPS — or www and non-www — both resolving. That can look like four copies of your site. Fix: pick one canonical version and 301-redirect the rest.
  • Keyword cannibalisation — two pages chasing the same term compete with each other. Fix: consolidate them, or differentiate the intent.

On-page basics

  • Missing or duplicate title tags — your single biggest on-page lever, and routinely left templated or blank. Fix: a unique, descriptive title on every page.
  • Missing meta descriptions — Google will write its own, usually worse. Fix: write one for every important page.
  • Multiple or missing H1s. Fix: exactly one clear H1 per page.
  • Images with no alt text — bad for accessibility and invisible to image search. Fix: describe every meaningful image.

Core Web Vitals & performance

Speed is both a ranking factor and a conversion factor. The repeat offenders:

  • Slow Largest Contentful Paint from oversized hero images and render-blocking scripts. Fix: compress images to next-gen formats and defer non-critical JavaScript.
  • Layout shift (CLS) from images and embeds with no reserved space. Fix: set explicit width and height on media.
  • Uncompressed, uncached assets. Fix: enable compression and browser caching.

Mobile & security

  • Not genuinely mobile-friendly — tiny tap targets, text that needs pinching. Google indexes mobile-first, so your phone layout is your primary site. Fix: responsive, mobile-first design.
  • No HTTPS, or mixed content — an insecure padlock erodes both trust and rankings. Fix: install SSL and serve every asset over HTTPS.

Structured data

Missing or invalid schema is the most common “free win left on the table.” Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article and FAQ markup help Google — and AI answer engines — understand and feature your pages. Fix: add valid structured data and test it.

The pattern behind all of it

Notice what these have in common: not one is about writing more content. They are about removing friction between the content you already have and the engines trying to read it. That is why a technical audit so often beats another month of blogging on pure ROI — you are unlocking rankings you have already earned. Want the short version you can run yourself?
