Sweet Heaven: Designing a Bakery Website That Sells the Smell

You cannot put a fresh croissant through a screen. So how do you make a bakery website that makes people hungry — and books custom-cake orders before they've finished scrolling?

Sweet Heaven: Designing a Bakery Website That Sells the Smell

Sweet Heaven sells an experience that is almost entirely physical — warmth, smell, the first bite. A website has none of those senses to work with. The brief, really, was to translate craving into clicks: make people hungry, and make ordering a custom cake feel effortless.

Designing for appetite

We built the whole site around a few deliberate choices:

  • Photography as the hero, not decoration. Full-bleed, art-directed shots with shallow depth of field — the visual language of craving. We commissioned a half-day shoot rather than leaning on stock, because authenticity is the entire point of a local bakery.
  • Warm, legible type and generous whitespace so the food never competes with clutter. The brand should feel like the shop: calm, abundant, a little indulgent.
  • A custom-cake enquiry flow that asks the three questions that actually matter — occasion, date, headcount — and nothing else. Every extra field on a form is a reason to abandon it.

Make the next step obvious

A beautiful site that does not tell people what to do is just a gallery. So every page funnels gently toward one of two actions: visit us, or order a custom cake. The custom-cake button follows you down the page, the bakery’s hours and map are never more than a tap away, and the enquiry form prefills the occasion you clicked from.

The quiet wins

Behind the appetite, we did the unglamorous work that keeps a small business found and fast: structured data so Google shows the menu and hours directly, compressed imagery so the site loads instantly on a phone in the shop’s own neighbourhood, and accessibility done properly so nobody is shut out.

The result is a site that does what the shop does — it makes you want to come in. For a local bakery, that is the only metric that matters: more people through the door, and more custom orders booked before they ever arrive.
