How Long Does It Take to Build a Shopify Store?

DIY templated launches take 1-4 weeks of evenings. Freelancers ship in 3-8 weeks. Small-agency Launch tier 3-5 weeks, Growth 5-10, Signature 8-14, mid-agency 3-6 months. The biggest timeline-killer at every tier is the same: content readiness.

TL;DR

A small Shopify store built by a small agency takes 3-5 weeks at the Launch tier, 5-10 weeks at the Growth tier, and 8-14 weeks at the Signature tier. DIY builds run 1-4 weeks for the build itself but stall on content. Mid-sized agencies quote 3-6 months for similar scope, mostly because of internal process overhead. The single biggest predictor of timeline is whether your content is ready on day one.

Timeline by who’s building it (2026)

The honest ranges, from the fastest to the slowest:

  • DIY on Shopify — 1-4 weeks for the build, but most DIY stores never launch because content gets stuck
  • Freelancer — 3-8 weeks. Wide range because freelancer schedules are wide.
  • Small agency, Launch tier — 3-5 weeks for a theme-based store
  • Small agency, Growth tier — 5-10 weeks for a customized build with content migration
  • Small agency, Signature tier — 8-14 weeks for fully custom theme development
  • Mid-sized agency — 3-6 months for what a small agency does in 6-10 weeks. Same code, more meetings.
  • Enterprise agency — 4-9 months. Different product. Usually overkill for sub-$5M revenue stores.

The Oakville/GTA market is roughly the same as North American averages, with a slight bias toward faster turnaround because the small-agency cluster around the GTA is competitive.

What kills a Shopify timeline

In 90% of cases where a build runs late, one of these four things happened:

1. Content readiness

Product photos taken on phones, product descriptions still being written by the founder during week 4, About page copy promised for week 2 that arrives week 7. This is the single biggest cause of timeline slip and it’s almost always on the client side.

Fix: write the content before the project starts, or pay the agency to write it as a separate line item.

2. Scope creep

“While we’re at it, can we also…” Subscription product. Wholesale tier. Multi-currency. A blog. Each addition takes time, and each one breaks the timeline if it lands mid-build instead of in the original scope.

Fix: write everything you might want into the scope before signing. Or accept that change orders extend the timeline.

3. Design revision loops

Round 1: client loves it. Round 2: client’s spouse hates it, can we try something else? Round 3: client shows it to a friend who used to work in marketing, can we add their suggestions? Round 4: now they want to go back to Round 1.

Fix: a fixed number of revision rounds in writing, and one decision-maker on the client side.

4. App integrations

Subscriptions, custom shipping, B2B pricing, ERP sync, ReCharge, headless storefront stuff — anything beyond a stock Shopify app config will eat 1-3 weeks of timeline that wasn’t visible in the quote. Identify these in discovery, not week 3.

What we need from you on day one to hit the fast end of the range

To deliver a 3-week Launch build or a 5-week Growth build, here’s what we ask for at kickoff:

  • All product data — titles, descriptions, prices, SKUs, weights, variant options — in a single spreadsheet
  • One product image per variant, web-ready (under 2MB each)
  • Brand assets — logo files (SVG preferred), brand colors, fonts (or budget for licensing)
  • Copy for About, Contact, Policies (Privacy, Terms, Shipping, Refund) — we have templates for the policies
  • Payment provider confirmed — Shopify Payments, Stripe, or PayPal account ready
  • Shipping zones and rates decided — Canada Post live rates or flat zones
  • Domain registrar login (or DNS access)
  • One decision-maker named for design approval

If you can hand us all of this on day one, we hit the fast end of every range. If half of it shows up in week 3, the timeline extends.

The five phases of a typical Shopify build

Across Launch, Growth, and Signature tiers, every project moves through the same five phases. The time spent in each shifts by tier.

Phase 1: Discovery (3-7 days)

Kickoff call, requirements doc, content audit, app stack decision, theme decision (Growth tier) or design wireframes (Signature tier). This is when we identify the integrations and scope gotchas before they become billable surprises.

Phase 2: Design (5-21 days)

For Launch: theme customization — colors, fonts, hero, product page layout. For Growth and Signature: Figma designs of home, product, collection, and key content templates. Client reviews and approves before any code is written.

Phase 3: Build (10-30 days)

Theme development on Shopify staging. Product import. Collection setup. App installs and config. Payment, shipping, tax setup. Page templates. This is the longest phase and the most predictable in length.

Phase 4: Content, SEO, QA (5-10 days)

Content upload, image optimization, alt text, title tags, meta descriptions, structured data, sitemap prep. Cross-browser and cross-device QA. Performance audit. Pre-launch checklist.

Phase 5: Launch + handoff (2-5 days)

Launch night: DNS, sitemap to Search Console, redirect verification (for migrations), monitoring. Training session, handoff document, post-launch support window begins.

A real timeline from a recent project

Smash House — local Oakville-area restaurant brand. We did a Shopify rebuild on the Growth tier ($4,900 CAD). The build took 6 weeks end to end.

  • Week 1 — Kickoff, content audit, theme decision (Impact, customized). Product photos shot day 3.
  • Week 2 — Figma designs for home, menu/products, online ordering flow. Two revision rounds compressed into one week because the owner was decisive.
  • Week 3 — Build on staging. Product/menu items in. Payment via Shopify Payments. Local pickup logic for Oakville locations.
  • Week 4 — Content upload, SEO (LocalBusiness schema + opening hours + menu schema), performance pass to LCP 2.1s mobile.
  • Week 5 — QA, mobile fixes, training session recorded, soft-launch to a private URL for the team to test ordering flow.
  • Week 6 — Public launch, monitoring, two minor bug fixes the first weekend.

The reason this hit 6 weeks instead of 10: content was ready in week 1, the owner approved designs fast, and scope didn’t change after kickoff.

Why mid-sized agencies quote 3-6 months for the same work

It’s not that they’re slower at coding. It’s that:

  • Project managers, account managers, design directors, and developers all have meetings about your project
  • Internal review cycles add 3-5 days per phase
  • QA is a separate team, scheduling between teams adds latency
  • The agency is running 8-15 projects in parallel, your priority shifts

For a sub-$5M revenue Shopify store, this overhead doesn’t usually pay for itself. A small agency or senior freelancer is faster and often cheaper. For an enterprise B2B store with custom checkout and ERP integration, the mid-sized agency overhead starts to make sense.

How to spot a too-fast quote

If someone tells you they can build a custom Shopify store in 5 days, one of these is true:

  • It’s not actually custom — it’s a theme with the logo swapped
  • Content, SEO, structured data, and training aren’t in scope
  • The “5 days” is build time, and you’ll spend 3 more weeks in revisions and content prep that wasn’t counted
  • The work is being subcontracted to an offshore team without QA

Honest minimum for a real Shopify build with full SEO setup, training, and post-launch support is about 3 weeks. That’s our Launch tier floor.

How to spot a too-slow quote

If a small agency quotes 4-5 months for a 100-product Shopify store with no custom integrations, ask what’s filling those months. Common reasons projects bloat:

  • The agency is overbooked and you’re getting a slot 8 weeks out
  • “Strategy” or “research” phases that don’t produce deliverables you can use
  • Too many design revision rounds priced into the timeline
  • Internal process overhead disguised as project timeline

For most small to mid Shopify stores, 6-10 weeks is the realistic window.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the absolute fastest I can launch a Shopify store?

If you DIY on a free theme and have content ready, you can technically launch in 48-72 hours. It will not rank, it will not look custom, and you’ll be redoing it within a year — but you’ll be online.

How do I speed up an agency build without paying more?

Get your content done first. Name one decision-maker. Respond to design questions inside 24 hours. Don’t change scope. That alone shaves 1-3 weeks off most projects.

Do migrations take longer than fresh builds?

Slightly. A migration adds 3-7 days for data export, redirect mapping, and SEO transfer. Fresh builds skip that. See our Shopify cost guide for the cost side.

What if I’m not sure about design and want lots of revisions?

Honest: budget 1-2 extra weeks and have the conversation with your agency upfront. Don’t surprise them in week 6 with “can we try a totally different direction.”

How long does a custom Shopify theme take vs. a customized stock theme?

Stock theme customization: 1-2 weeks of build. Custom theme from scratch: 4-6 weeks of build. The difference matters if you’re trying to rank against competitors using the same themes — custom code is faster, leaner, and more distinct.

Can I launch with a few products and add the rest later?

Yes, and we recommend it. Launch with 20-50 well-presented products rather than 300 half-finished ones. The remaining catalog can go up in the weeks after.

How long does it take to rank in Google after launch?

Indexing happens in days. Ranking for competitive terms takes 3-6 months for a new domain, 1-3 months for a migration that kept its backlinks. SEO is a different timeline from build.

What about WordPress timelines?

Similar ranges. A WooCommerce store is usually 1-2 weeks longer than equivalent Shopify because of plugin configuration and security hardening. See our Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison.

What to do next

If you’ve got a launch date in mind, count back: 3 weeks for a Launch-tier build, 6 weeks for Growth, 10 weeks for Signature, plus 1-2 weeks of content prep on your side. That’s when the conversation with an agency needs to start.

Book a discovery call on our contact page and we’ll give you a realistic timeline based on what’s actually in your project — not a marketing number. Tier and price breakdown is on our pricing page.
