AI Overviews Killed 60% of My Clicks — Here’s What I Did

AI Overviews now trigger on 47% of queries and have dropped organic CTR up to 61% on informational SERPs. Using our own GSC data as the case study — 165 impressions, 0 clicks, position 93 — here is the 5-tactic playbook that earns AI citations in 2026.

TL;DR

Google AI Overviews (AIO) now appear on 47% of queries in 2026 and have cut organic click-through rates by up to 61% on informational searches. The fix isn’t to fight the SERP — it’s to become the source AIO cites. Five tactics: 40–60 word answer at the top of every page, definitive (non-hedged) language, visible Updated dates, original first-hand data, and Person + Organization schema. We did exactly this on our own site in June 2026 and we’re tracking citation lift over the next 90 days. Here’s the playbook and what we expect.

The 2026 reality, in numbers

Google AI Overviews are now the default experience for almost half of search. The data points worth knowing:

  • 47% of queries trigger an AI Overview in mid-2026 (up from ~14% at launch in 2024)
  • Organic CTR drops up to 61% on informational queries where AIO appears — searchers get their answer in the overview and never click
  • Commercial and transactional queries are less affected (~15–25% CTR drop) because buyers still need to land on a site to actually buy
  • Branded queries are barely affected — people typing your business name still click your site

The headline number — “60% click loss” — is real but lopsided. It hits sites that built their traffic on informational queries (definition pages, how-to content, comparison guides) harder than sites built on commercial intent.

Why this looks scary but isn’t

The instinctive reaction to AIO is “search is dead, SEO is dead, I should pivot to social.” That’s wrong for three reasons.

First, AI Overviews still cite sources. The citation is a link. People do click citations, particularly when they want to verify a claim or read more. The CTR from a cited position is lower than the CTR from a classic top-3 organic position, but it’s not zero — it’s roughly 40–60% of the old top-3 CTR. Citation is the new ranking.

Second, the same content optimizations that get you cited in Google AIO also get you cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. One investment, four surfaces. The compounding effect is bigger than the AIO loss.

Third, branded and commercial queries — the ones that actually make money for most small businesses — are barely impacted. If your traffic was mostly informational pageviews that never converted, you weren’t losing much revenue, just vanity metrics.

The 5-tactic playbook

1. A 40–60 word answer paragraph at the top of every page

Google AIO extracts 44–55% of its citations from the top 30% of a page. If your real answer to the page’s topic lives 1,200 words down after a brand story and four illustrations, AIO never finds it.

Open every page with a TL;DR or summary box: 40–60 words, the literal answer to whatever the page targets. We added these to every blog post and major service page on CodeCraft in June 2026. Same content, repositioned. AI citation extraction needs the answer first.

2. Definitive language, not hedged language

Cited content uses definitive claims 1.8× more than non-cited content. “Shopify Basic costs $45/mo CAD” wins. “Shopify pricing generally varies depending on plan and use case” loses. Same fact, different posture.

Audit your existing pages for:

  • “may,” “might,” “could” → “does,” “will,” “is”
  • “typically,” “generally,” “in most cases” → commit or cut
  • “results vary” → either give the range or remove the disclaimer
  • “some experts believe” → “[Specific named source] showed [specific finding]”

3. Visible Updated dates

65% of AI-bot hits land on content published or updated within the past year. Schema dates matter; visible dates matter more. Both should be present.

At the top of every page, near the byline: “Updated June 2026” or the relevant month. In the schema: accurate datePublished and dateModified on every Article/BlogPosting. If a page hasn’t been touched in a year, refresh it or accept that AI engines will skip it.

4. Original first-hand data

Pages with 3+ original data points are roughly 4× more likely to be cited. The data doesn’t have to be groundbreaking — it has to be yours.

What counts:

  • “Across 12 Shopify builds in 2026, average build time was 4.5 weeks.”
  • “We moved a Streetsville restaurant from #11 to #1 in the Mississauga map pack in 7 weeks.”
  • “On a sample of 30 GTA small business sites, 87% had no structured data at all.”

Numbers people can only get from you. AI engines need primary sources; specifics are what they cite.

5. Person + Organization schema

Pages with named authors backed by Person schema, linked to Organization schema, get cited roughly 3× more often than anonymous content. The minimum schema set:

  • Organization on every page
  • Person for the named author
  • Article / BlogPosting with author referencing Person, datePublished, dateModified
  • Product on pricing pages
  • LocalBusiness for local-serving businesses

Most small business sites have zero structured data. This is the single biggest gap and the easiest fix.

CodeCraft’s own story — what we did in June 2026

I want to share our own numbers because most “AI search advice” comes from people who haven’t run the experiment on their own site. We have, and here’s where we stand.

The starting point (June 2026, 90-day Google Search Console data):

  • 165 impressions, 0 clicks, average position 93
  • 88% of impressions from Canada, 14% mobile-only
  • /locations/mississauga/ was 53% of impressions at position 96 — Google classified it as thin-pSEO
  • 9 impressions wasted on brand confusion with “codecraft digital marketing” (a different company)

Position 93 means we were on page 9. Nobody scrolls that far. Zero clicks was an accurate reflection of zero useful visibility.

What we shipped on 2026-06-30:

  • Three cluster pillar posts (Shopify cost, Shopify vs WooCommerce, How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT)
  • TL;DR answer cards at the top of every existing page
  • Visible author bylines and Updated dates throughout
  • Product schema on the pricing/services pages
  • Organization + Person schema sitewide
  • Rewrote /locations/mississauga/ as a real city page with case study content

Expectation: 30–90 days for the first AI-citation lift to show up in our prompt-tracker (we run a 20-prompt library across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude monthly). 60–120 days for measurable Google AIO citation appearances. 4–8 months for organic position improvement from page 9 toward the front pages.

We’ll update this post quarterly with the actual results. The point isn’t that we have it figured out — it’s that we’re running the same playbook we recommend to clients and showing the work.

What you can actually track

Three things worth measuring monthly:

  1. AI prompt-tracker: 15–20 prompts you’d want to be cited for. Run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude. Note citation count and rank. Track over time.
  2. Google Search Console: impressions, clicks, position. Look for impressions rising even if clicks stay flat — that’s pre-citation signal.
  3. Branded search: impressions for your business name. AI citation lift usually shows up here first because people who see your name in an AIO go Google you.

What NOT to do

The 2024–2025 advice that doesn’t work in 2026:

  1. Don’t ship an llms.txt file. Google publicly said it does nothing for Search. 0.1% of AI bot requests touch it.
  2. Don’t deliberately fragment content into “LLM-friendly chunks.” Google explicitly warned against this. Write for humans first.
  3. Don’t chase the FAQ rich result. Google killed it on desktop in May 2026. Keep FAQ schema (Bing and AI engines still parse it) but don’t expect Google rich results.
  4. Don’t publish unedited AI-generated content at scale. The March and May 2026 core updates targeted this directly. Affected sites lost 60–90% of traffic in days.
  5. Don’t panic-pivot to TikTok. If your business hasn’t been on TikTok, AI-search panic isn’t the reason to start. Stick with the surfaces your buyers actually use.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly should I expect AI Overviews citation to appear after making these changes?

30–60 days for Perplexity (real-time retrieval), 60–120 days for ChatGPT and Google AIO, 90–180 days for established Google rank improvement. Expect a flat 4–8 weeks of nothing before the first signs.

Is it worth fighting AIO with paid ads?

Google paid ads still appear above AI Overviews on commercial queries. For high-intent commercial keywords, ads remain effective. For informational queries, ads convert less because the buyer isn’t ready to buy yet.

Should I block AI bots from crawling my site?

No — blocking removes you from the citation pool entirely. You can’t be the source if AI engines can’t read you. The “block all AI bots” advice from 2024 was wrong; in 2026 it’s a self-inflicted invisibility.

What if my business is local and informational-query loss doesn’t apply?

Local businesses are the least affected by AIO. Map-pack queries and “near me” searches don’t typically trigger AIO. Focus on local SEO mechanics — GBP optimization, reviews, real service-area pages.

Are AI Overviews going away?

No. Google’s monetization plan around AIO is in early stages (sponsored citations are being tested), which means Google is committed. AIO is the new SERP, not a phase.

How do I know if AIO is hurting my specific site?

Compare your Google Search Console clicks and impressions month-over-month from January 2026 forward. If impressions are flat or up but clicks are down 30%+, AIO is likely the cause. Run your top 20 queries manually and check whether AIO appears.

Do AIO citations follow the same E-E-A-T rules as classic SEO?

Yes, amplified. Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, Trust signals matter more in AIO source selection because the AI is choosing what to cite, and it’s heavily biased toward visibly credible authors and sources.

What single move would help my site most?

For most small business sites: add a 40–60 word TL;DR at the top of every page, plus an author byline with Person schema. One-day project, compounds for months.
